Batala is an afro-brazilian and samba-reggae percussion group created in 1997 by Giba Goncalves who is also the composer of BATALA's music. There are lots of these bands around the world including Wales, England, Brazil, Belgium, Portugal, France, Washington and Spain and we're still spreading! There are four types of drums played at Batala these are Repinique, Cutador, Caixa (most commonly known as snare) and Bass. Each player plays on a different drum and the complexity of rhythm varies on each drum, so even if you've never picked up an instrument before, you will still be able to come along and play. (during the summer gigging season the practices are spent getting ready for the gigs so if you join us here please be patient during these times) In Bangor we currently have about 15 to 20 members and always welcome newcomers of all ages from 15 (exceptions can sometimes be made for younger individuals)
